Let’s be honest: We are all professionals here. We are all in the room to make money. It supports our communities, it feeds our families, and it fuels our dreams. But in the world of business, there are only two ways to get those sales: expensive lead generation (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn ads) or building relationships.
Most of you attend networking events because you choose the latter. You know that the “Relationship Economy” is the most powerful marketing engine on the planet. But here is the problem: everyone tells you to “go out and network,” but very few people tell you exactly how to turn those handshakes into revenue.
In the first part of this series, we talked about Build, how to identify your ideal client and referral partners before you even walk out the door. Today, we dive into the second, and perhaps most critical, pillar of Professional Relationship Management (PRM): Maintain.
Because the truth is, the fortune isn’t in the handshake. The fortune is in the follow-up.
The 91% Problem: Where Most Professionals Drop the Ball
If you want to know why most networking events feel like a waste of time, look no further than this anchor statistic: 91% of professionals never follow up after a networking event.
They collect the cards. They have the “great chat.” They might even connect on LinkedIn. And then? Silence.
The “Maintain” phase is where the bridge is built between a “nice to meet you” and a “here is a check.” If you don’t have a sales follow up system, you aren’t networking, you’re just socializing.

The “How Can I Help?” Filter
When I follow up, I don’t start with a pitch. I follow up with 10 out of 10 people I meet. My message is simple:
> “Hey, it was great meeting you. How can I help you? Who are you looking to meet? Who can I introduce you to?”
You would think people would jump at that, right? Wrong. A huge percentage of people won’t even reply to a message asking how I can give them value.
Here is the secret: If someone doesn’t reply to a “how can I help you” message, they were never going to reply to a sales message anyway. Use the follow-up as a filter. It tells you exactly who is serious about their business and who is just “playing” professional.
Staying Top of Mind Without Being “That Person”
We’ve all been on the receiving end of a “salesy” follow-up. You know the one, the person who meets you for thirty seconds and then sends a three-paragraph pitch about their life insurance or coaching program.
Don’t be that person.
Maintaining a relationship is about being the Connector. It’s about staying top of mind by providing value without a price tag.
The Brianna Example
The other day, I saw an event come up for a social impact group with the Chamber of Commerce. I remembered a conversation I had with a woman named Brianna, who runs a nonprofit. I didn’t send her a pitch for Follow-Up Now!. I sent her the link to that event and said, “Hey, I saw this and thought of you. It looks like a great fit for your mission.”
It cost me zero dollars. It took me thirty seconds. But guess what? She likes me now. And when people know, like, and trust you, they do business with you.
Nobody brings their checkbook to a networking event. You aren’t going to get the business there. You get the business by maintaining the relationship until the timing is right.
The “Close Circle” Strategy
You cannot possibly maintain a deep relationship with 500 people at once. PRM is not about volume; it’s about systems. You need to identify your Close Circle, those 5 to 10 key referral partners in your space who know, like, and trust you.
These are the people you trade business with back and forth. You are looking out for them, and they are looking out for you. You maintain this group by:
- Sending them relevant articles.
- Inviting them to events.
- Making warm introductions.
When you become the person who makes great introductions, your phone starts to ring. You want your phone to ring! But there is a catch…
Vet Before You Vouch: Protecting Your Reputation
Your reputation is your most valuable asset in the Relationship Economy. When you refer someone, you are attaching your name to their performance.

I’ll tell you a story about my friend Tony. Tony needed a job done. He called one guy who was supposed to be “locked in,” but he didn’t show up. He called a second guy who said, “I can’t get there until 3:00.” Tony went with the first guy initially, but when that guy ghosted, the 3:00 guy showed up exactly when he said he would and crushed the job.
If I ask Tony for a recommendation and he sends me the guy who didn’t show up, I’m looking at Tony funny. I’m not asking Tony for help again because he’s got “sketchy people” in his circle.
You have to vet the professionals you meet. Before you give out a referral, make sure they are reliable. If you send a bad referral, you don’t just lose the deal, you lose the trust of your network.
Automating the Art of Connection
The problem most professionals face is that they want to follow up, but they get busy. They attend 40+ networking events a year, collect hundreds of cards, and then get buried in daily operations.
This is why we built Follow-Up Now!.
It’s not a CRM. It’s a Professional Relationship Management platform designed to be the operating system for your professional life.

Our Automatic follow ups and personalized messages ensure that you never drop the ball again. Whether it’s a follow up email after a gala or a follow up schedule for your close circle, the app does the heavy lifting so you can stay focused on being a human.
Why You Need a System (PRM over CRM)
Traditional CRMs are built for pipelines and transactions. They treat people like data points. A contact management app helps you organize, but a PRM helps you nurture.
With our AI follow up assistant, you get suggestions for messages that actually matter: not generic templates. You turn “out of sight, out of mind” into “top of mind, top of wallet.”
Build. Maintain. Monetize.
Maintaining your network is the bridge to the final pillar: Monetize. In our next post, we’ll talk about how to ethically turn those nurtured relationships into revenue through referral fees and strategic partnerships.
But you can’t get to the money if you haven’t built the trust.
